1/03/2010 - More Qld Madness
A Qld dock worker was killed last week (around the 20th) after being struck by a forklift on a gangway. There is not much info about the incident itself but this link from the MUA gives some of the family impact and the ongoing discussions around safety on the waterfront.

Public Safety Issue- ACDC Fan impaled when his wheelchair ran off a platform at the concert. Seems his mate bumped the controls of the wheelchair and he fell onto a piece of metal he uses to grab things. He is still in a critical condition in hospital. Looks like the platform may not have had any edge protection facing the stage.

Safety and politics Qld style. There is talk of limiting common law entitlements in Qld (again) after it was revealed our fund is in a little danger. The unions are already gearing up. This article is hinting that Workcover are intentionally giving away heaps in common law payouts at the moment to point to the fact that common law payouts are out of the control with the hope of therefore securing public opinion. Won’t be long until this appears on ACA or TT, or a similar quality news show…. Some with long memories may remember that this issue (restricting common law access by injured workers) is one of the reasons Wayne Goss got tossed (that and the Koalas…)

Couple of prosecutions-
$65,000 fine when a worker drowned while working on a pontoon that overturned at a sand plant.
$40,000 fine after a worker operating a padfoot roller suffered a fractured leg. The roller rolled and as the operator jumped clear the roll over structure got him. Mmmmmm I think that is why you are meant to wear a seat belt……
