A study conducted in the US gives the odds of dying through various mechanisms. This is based on 2005 data, and of course for the US, so I don’t think it would translate accross to Australia. Still, some scary figures.
So the lifetime risk of dying from the following in the US, in 2005, was:
- Driving a car- 1 in 261 people
- Riding a motorbike- 1 in 869
- Being a pedestrian- 1 in 627
- Firearm discharde (accidental death)- 1 in 4830
- Firearm discharge (intention death)- 1 in 309
- Fireworks discharge- 1 in 952,786
