In late 2016 and early 2017, a series of nurses attained Certificate 3 Mines Rescue accreditation under instruction from Baseline Training. Multi-skilling such as this is an industry first, and such initiatives constitute what defines Baseline Training, and what makes its contribution to Work Health and Safety, and the workforce itself, so significant.

Equipping workers with an integrated skillset—with the ability to perform a variety of separate, yet interconnected, functions—is not only efficient, but streamlines tasks, particularly when dealing with medical needs and emergency response situations.

Multi-skilling of this kind is rarely, if ever, found in the mining industry, yet it increases the ability of individual workers exponentially, reducing costs for the employer, and making the workers themselves all the more employable. Of course, higher wages are required when considering workers viable across a broad range of skills and stations, but the efficiency this kind of versatility affords is worth the price.

Baseline Training has executed similar strategies in multi-skilling, with trainees eventuating competency across a range of qualifications, and combinations thereof, including, but not limited to: Nursing, security, paramedical duties, fire and rescue, emergency response, drug and alcohol testing, inductions, injury management, and return to work practices.

As with any new initiative or training structure, obstacles present themselves which must be overcome. It is vital to incentivise both the potential trainees and their prospective employers, and to inform said parties of the benefits such training would provide.

To see a versatile, multi-skilled workforce reach its peak potential, and for the clear increases in the efficiency and effectiveness of that workforce to be realised, a firm management strategy must be put in place. The ‘bundling’ of skillsets that Baseline Training leans toward requires the cooperation and coordination of all requisite parties.

For example, in order for personnel to maintain their respective skill sets, the proper training, revision, or upskilling—when relevant and where needed—should be provided either on site, or in a similarly accessible manner.

Ultimately, Baseline Training envisions the bundling of skills, and the amalgamation of various qualifications and competencies, to be the future of the workforce. With the advancement of technology, and with individual skills becoming ever more specialised, there has arisen a need to combine abilities, to dispense with inefficient, out-dated systems. It is prudent, therefore, to foster among the workforce a sense of industrial agility, and a means of achieving greater, more productive output as a collective whole.
