Introduction:
The Advanced First Aid course provides a set of skills to provide an advanced first aid response in the event of an emergency. It is relevant for personnel who are the designated first aiders‚ particularly those working in emergency response, construction, mining or any occupation involving hazardous work.

It is relevant for personnel who are the designated first aiders‚ and will provide learners with the skills and knowledge to effectively operate advanced resuscitation equipment such as oxygen and a defibrillator.

The Provide Advanced Resuscitation element of the course provides candidates with the skills and knowledge to understand the safety requirements when handling an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED)‚ as well as the skills to use an AED within the first minutes after a cardiac arrest, as well as skills and knowledge to safely perform oxygen therapy and resuscitation in the workplace.

PPE Requirements - Enclosed footwear, long pants and a sleeved shirt are required at Baseline Training courses.
- Pre-Requisite Unit - HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
- Fitness Requirement - Training and assessment involves moderate to high physical activity. Candidates are required to be able to freely walk, bend and twist, perform safe lifting techniques and be familiar with typical workplace risk and safety protocols
- Fitness Requirement - As an accredited training package, the requirement of this course states that learners are physically capable of performing uninterrupted CPR for at least 2 minutes on a CPR manikin placed on the floor
- Language, Literacy and Numeracy Skills - Candidates must possess basic literacy and numeracy skills
- Advanced first aiders may be relied upon to coordinate and manage the response to the incident until professionals arrive
- Advanced first aid also covers a broader range of cases such as major trauma, sudden cardiac arrest, management of large incidents and treatment of emotionally disturbed and drug affected casualties
- Understanding the safety requirements when handling an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED)
- Skills and knowledge required to use an AED within the first minutes after a cardiac arrest
- Skills and knowledge to safely perform oxygen therapy and resuscitation in the workplace or onsite at an emergency event
The combined Provide Advanced First Aid and Provide Advanced Resuscitation and Oxygen Therapy course is a comprehensive course delivered through a combination of hands on practical and theoretical activities‚ scenario based real-life exercises and candidate assessment.

Note: There is a physical component to this provide first aid course. Candidates will be required to participate in role play activities, practical assessments and be able to perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on a manikin placed on the floor.
The Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines [10.1] recommend that refresher training in CPR is completed every 12 months.
The Safe Work Australia | First Aid in the Workplace – Code of Practice [July 2019] recommends the frequency of training for First Aiders as refresher training in CPR should be carried out annually and first aid qualifications should be renewed every three years.
