Introduction:

The objective of this course is to provide candidates with the skills and knowledge surrounding in the requirements of the Work Health and Safety Act & Regulations 2011, Code of Practice – Confined Space 2021, and AS/NZS 2865-2009: Safe Working in a Confined Space, to enable them to work safely in confined spaces.

Candidates are guided through recognition of typical hazardous conditions relating to confined spaces. Armed with the knowledge to identify potential hazards, candidates learn how to assess a task, control the hazards and develop and implement safe work practices.

This course is designed for personnel who may be required to: 
• Design, modify or conduct works on or in confined spaces
• Are involved in processes to identify or conduct risk assessments on confined spaces
• Enter or work within confined spaces
• Undertake the role of the standby person
• Participate in confined space rescue or emergency procedures

PPE Requirements - Enclosed footwear, long pants and a sleeved shirt are required at Baseline Training courses. 

  • Pre-Requisite Unit - MSMPER200 Work in accordance with an issued permit [included as part of the course]
  • Fitness Requirement - Training and assessment involves moderate to high physical activity. Candidates are required to be able to freely walk, bend and twist, perform safe lifting techniques and be familiar with typical workplace risk and safety protocols
  • Language, Literacy and Numeracy Skills - Candidates must possess basic literacy and numeracy skills
Upon successful completion of this course, each candidate will receive a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework.
 
Learners cover the duties of confined space operators, standby personnel and rescue crews all of these are presented in a combination of classroom and practical activities.


The assessment for this program has been designed to assess a person’s competence in accordance with the Manufacturing Training Package (MSA07), AS2865:2009 and the proprietary requirements of the organisation or workplace. The assessment will consist of both a written and practical components.

  • On successful completion of all theory and practical assessments, candidates will be issued a Statement of Attainment with the following units of competency:
  • MSMPER205 - Enter confined space
  • MSMPER200 - Work in accordance with an issued permit
  • MSMWHS217 - Gas test atmospheres
  • Overview of AS2865:2009 & State Legislation
  • Outline the legislation requirements for confined spaces
  • Written Authorisations (Permits) for entry into a confined space
  • Demonstrate rescue procedures
  • Recognise the need for Atmospheric Testing & Monitoring
  • Toxic contaminants & Workplace Exposure Standards
  • Recognise the need for fire prevention and equipment required for fire suppression
